Okay, I'm rather proud of this one. I'm planning on doing a whole series of pages from a 'sketchbook', with charcoal drawings on aged paper. Lots of mythological figures and such. :D I hope they'll be a hit at Dragon*Con.

The original is about 14" x 17". I mucked up the paper with a half-dozen watercolor washes and some salt, and tore off the edges. Then I sketched some guide lines in brown pastel. The drawing was done in charcoal and heightened a bit with white pastel.

The model is the fabulous and inspiring *lockstock.

((EDIT))

Tweaked this a bit in the GIMP to clean up the color skew from the scanner, and to post a slightly larger full view to show off more detail. 'Cuz I'm vain like that.

((EDIT AGAIN))

The original has sold. Prints will be available through the Dragon*Con Art on Demand store soon.

Oh, and I have a half-baked back story about her being the daughter of Llorengil, the artist who created the sketchbook. Kindof a crazy elvish Leonardo Da Vinci meets Eland the Younger.

In fine Tolkein fashion, I took the model's name (Sophie), found the Finno-Ugric equivalent (Zsˇfia in Hungarian), and added an Elvish feminine ending (-iel or -Ű), but since accents are tricky to type, I just went with -iel and knocked the accent off the Hungarian name.

I am SUCH a geek.

This is gorgeous. I love that you actually roughened the paper rather than relying on digital methods.

Yeah, I actually tried to do this digitally, and Painter crashed on me. A lot.

I'm glad I did this with traditional methods - it was, ironically, much faster for me to do it this way, and I have an original to sell in the show.

Lockstock is the best! :D

Hey

Very beautiful, i drawed also on carton, (i don't know how to say it in english) but it's great to draw on it with white so you can see the highlights very clear.

I think carton (Franšais?) would be cardboard? I've only started trying to heighten with white lately -- I've been looking at a lot of old master drawings lately. Wow, I wish I could get that good someday!

Proost!

That cracks me up. I totally know what you're talking about -- the fantasy female who has the vapid, faraway look in her eyes, because she's trying to remember "breathe in, then out, um... in, then out." All that mammary, and no frontal lobe. Feh. No thank you.

Thank you very much!

Hair is such a pain. What I did was: I sketched a few lines in brown pastel just to get the general shapes and the direction the hair was flowing. Then I took an extra-soft charcoal and shaded in the shapes in the hair, just big blocky chunks. I smeared that around with my finger to soften it and blend it a bit. I took a kneaded eraser and squished it to a point, and streaked out some lines for lighter hairs. I then took a medium-hard charcoal and started filling in lines to define actual hairs. This took forever. Then I took the white pastel and drew in some highlights. Here are some great tutorials for digitally painting hair, which I'd read recently and probably had some impact on how I drew this, even though it's a totally different medium. Thanks for the :+fav: and :+devwatch:!

wow, such a long answer ^^
thanks for the discription of the way you are working. it's always good to know how other people do the shading and stuff.
and thanks for the links, too. i think i will go through them tomorow 'cause at the moment i'm drawing at a picture and right now the hair has to be done ^^░
i think the link and your way of doing hair can help me although i draw this pic just with pencils

This is great! the only negative I would have, is that you have aged the paper too much and you cant really see some of the lines of the drawing......but I like it

well done.

Thanks! :boogie:

Yeah, it also doesn't help that the scanner dropped a lot of the white highlights. :shakefist:

For the next one I'm doing, I'm making sure that it's a more even and neutral color, less blotchy and spotty, since I think that really detracts from this piece. Eh, live and learn - not bad for a first shot, though.
