Brigid at Imbolc by Kittenpants Brigid at Imbolc by Kittenpants
A painting of the goddess Brigid for the holiday of Imbolc.

The model is the ever-wonderful `lockstock

Painted in the GIMP using a Wacom intuos 3 tablet.

----

This piece was published as the cover of Witchtower Magazine in the UK, magazine of the Pagan Network. (Volume 2, Issue 1) (Well, I say published, although I don't believe the issue ever went to print. Their site crashed and they decided to go web-only around that time, and I never received a contributor's copy. It is available for download in their archives section now, though.)

Lovely! I like that she's vaguely reminiscent of Mary (or is it the other way around....?) ;) Beautiful colors!

This is one of my all time favorite paintings. I'm a devotee of Brigid, and this one gets me choked up every time. Thank you so much for sharing your art with the internet at large.

Lovely shading and colours on this one! The outlines on the folds and her arms seem a bit jagged -- I don't know if that's on purpose or an artifact of compression. You may want to smooth them out a touch next time.

Thanks!

The 'original' is ginormous - over 1600 x 2300 px. So, I'm sure that's some of it. But the stock reference - and a lot of drapery studies I've done - had very, er, 'pointy' folds in the cloth. But, my drapery certainly needs work. I'm trying to do more studies in my home studio... (and yet, am I doing them now? No, I'm playing around on DA. Oops.) :eyeroll:

I think the drapery's good. I just thought some of the darker lines needed a bit more anti-aliasing. I usually work at something like 3000 x 3000 px (or bigger), so 1600 x 2300 px seems a bit on the low side to me! :D

OH, okay, I see what you mean now. :)

I'm envious. If I go above 3k x 3k, my computer starts to get so slow and cranky that it just drives me bonkers. Maybe next year I'll be able to afford an upgrade... :eyeroll:

Thank you -- I wanted her to be very fiery without the angry/zealous/hyperactive associations that sometimes come with fire. I was aiming for honey and hearthfire. Good to know it came across!

Wow, this is beautiful! The fiery, light colours are perfect for Imbolc. Brilliantly done, reminds me of those gorgeous medieval icons, but Pagan and digital and modern and cool. Blessed be!

Thanks! I was really trying for an 'iconography' sort of look, so I'm glad that came across, even with the different medium and techniques.

Brightest Blessings!

It really does come across. Is this going to hang (printed out) over your personal shrine or similar? it really deserves to be seen. The colours in this were an inspiration to my Shakti drawing.

Yep, I have a print that I put up on our home shrine every Imbolc. It's right at the top of the stairs as you enter the house, and the wall faces windows on the south side , so the colors positively glow during daylight hours. :D

You know I'm going to have to go look at your Shakti drawing now! :boogie:

Hey, I really need to remember to put my print information on all of these images. I also sell greeting cards with the image through Nine Fires Press, and I have prints available through my personal website, www.careyoxler.com
